Latino Children’s Book Awards in English and Their Use in Classrooms and Libraries

The number of Latino/Hispanic students in Utah communities continue to increase, as well as the need for culturally authentic literature appropriate for use in classrooms and in library programs. Luckily, the numbers of award-winning books published in the US that meet this need have also increased. This program will highlight the major Latino Children’s Book Awards in the US ― Américas Awards, Pura Belpré Award, and the Tomás Rivera Award ― highlight the most recent award-winners, and present resources and tools for their use in classrooms and library programs, including lesson plans and where to get these titles.

The Multicultural Library in the 21st Century

For over 20 years, librarians have addressed issues of cultural awareness and sensitivity but seldom have we discussed the skills needed to deliver culturally competent services. Considering Utah’s diverse population, librarians need an expanded definition of culture; increased knowledge about cultural groups in the State; and enhanced skills to effectively meet the demand for service. Join this interactive workshop where two leading diversity and inclusion experts will guide participants in a life-changing exploration and dialogue of what culture means for librarians in the 21st century and how we can use that knowledge to further the mission of the library.
