Flexible Spaces: Planning for Innovative Technology and Community Needs

There is no time like now to be a librarian, to be responsive to the services that we cannot even imagine because of the rapid change of technology. The future relevance of libraries depends on this paradigm shift of librarians continuing to be intermediaries to the future of technology and community. This mindset change, paradigm shift, must be focused on the future of libraries, on technology and community, creating open flexible spaces that allow for unforeseen future conditions, technology, and service models. In this session you will learn ways to adapt existing spaces to new technology, how to plan new spaces to be adaptable to new technology, and an introduction to some of the innovations in both technology and flexibility for library users and staff.

Adventures in Roving Reference

Roving Reference was a new way of providing service for the Day-Riverside Library in Salt Lake, as the facility celebrated it's 16th Birthday in 2012. The staff, looking for ways to best serve a diverse community with a young population, implemented a new model for helping patrons that involved moving out from behind desks. This allowed direct involvement with the large after school population of kids and allowed the staff to develop strong community-service standards and patron relations. Staff members will share information and insights about implementing elbow-to-elbow service within existing organizational frameworks and building constraints.

Hoarder's Guide to Collection Maintenance

Weeding is time consuming and can even be painful, yet we all recognize the importance of keeping our collections current. Not putting as much effort into the process of weeding out items that no longer work for our patrons can be just as harmful as failing to purchase new titles. This informative session will discuss steps that can be taken before, during, and after a weeding project to help make the process more manageable.

PP: Entrepreneurial Leadership in Public Libraries

Public libraries function in a climate where budget cuts and the realignment of services are a reality.  They have to find a balance between providing core services and offering new services that meet the information needs of their communities.  One way of doing this is by engaging in entrepreneurial activities in which a library creates new revenue streams. Yet, no study has investigated whether public library directors engage in entrepreneurial leadership as a means of generating revenue in new ways.  This presentation is based on a study which examined the view of library directors on entrepreneurial leadership, the types of entrepreneurial opportunities they are pursuing, and whether they are planning additional endeavors. Makerspaces

Makerspaces seem to be the latest buzz in the library world. However, what are they and what do people really mean when they are talking about them? Are Makerspaces something that require thousands of dollars of technology, or is it just a way of re-branding the programming libraries already do. The first goal of this session will be to get a general idea of what people are talking about when they talk about Makerspaces. The second and more important goal of this session will be to brainstorm ideas of how our libraries could use the Makerspace concept or if you already are using a Makerspace model in your library feel free to share your experiences.

The presentation will also discuss physical space, display and arrangement and collection issues, as well as staff awareness and action.
